Garnet for abrasive waterjet cutting of boat steel plates?

Garnet for Abrasive Waterjet Cutting of Ship Steel Plates (Almandine Garnet, for carbon steel / marine stainless steel plates) Positioning: It is designed for high-pressure abrasive waterjet cutting of hull blocks, ship steel plates, stainless steel plates and thick plates in shipyards. As a cold-cutting abrasive, it features tight control over soluble chloride to avoid subsequent rusting on cut edges, while balancing cutting efficiency and cut surface quality.

✅ Core Advantages First of all, it enables cold cutting with no heat-affected zone. There will be no burning edges, hardening or cracks. The material property of ship plates stays unchanged after cutting. Therefore, it works well for hull blocks, flanges, special-shaped openings and thick plate blanking, and helps eliminate welding risks brought by thermal processing.

Besides, it has low soluble chloride content to prevent edge rusting. Soluble chloride is kept ≤25 ppm. This requirement is slightly less stringent compared with the grade for aluminum alloy, yet it remains rigorous. It is compatible with carbon steel and marine stainless steel, and lowers the risk of pitting corrosion on cut edges under marine service conditions.

Furthermore, its sub-angular self-sharpening grains deliver high cutting efficiency. Mohs hardness reaches 7.5–8.0. New cutting edges keep generating when grains fracture. Thanks to concentrated particle size and low fines, abrasive feeding runs smoothly. It rarely clogs focusing tubes and hoses, extends nozzle service life, produces smooth cutting surfaces and cuts down polishing workload.

In addition, it contains low free silica below 0.1%. It creates low dust hazards and meets the occupational health and on-site environmental standards of shipyards.

Finally, its moisture content is controlled ≤0.3%. This prevents abrasive bridging and feed interruption due to dampness, and guarantees stable long-hour continuous waterjet operation.

✅ Recommended Grades

  • Standard ship plates, thick carbon / stainless steel: 80 mesh (most popular in shipyards)
  • Extra-thick ship plates for higher cutting speed: 60 mesh
  • Thin plates and precision cutouts: 120 mesh
